Elected to represent North Carolina's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1969 to 1981. Also served as a Superior Court Judge in 1956, Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina from 1961 to 1963, and Candidate for Governor of North Carolina in 1964. The Federal Building in Greensboro, North Carolina, was named for him in 1988. He was the grandson of inventor Lunsford Richardson, who invented Vick's Vaporub and Vick's cough drops.
