Nora Ellen Hill was born October 18, 1903 in Oklahoma, daughter of John L. Hill and Cora Lee Barton.
The 1910 Federal Census for Durant Ward 3, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Nora E. Hill, age 7, born in Oklahoma; living with her father, John L. Hill, a laborer of odd jobs, age 36, born in Texas; and her mother, Cora L., age 28, born in Texas. The census shows that John and Cora had been married 13 years and that they had given birth to six children, with four still living. Also living in the household were Nora's siblings: Minnie F. Hill, age 12; Ernest W. Hill, age 9; and Jesse M. Hill, age 2; all born in Oklahoma. Nora's parents ultimately would have a total of 10 children, including two dying within a year of birth and two dying in early childhood.
The 1920 Federal Census for Durant Ward 4, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Ellen Hill, age 17, born in Oklahoma, working as a servant for the private family of J.R. and Mamie Hannah, and their two daughters, Mary and Eleanor.
On March 2, 1922, Nora married Simon Turner Dwight who was born April 19, 1898 in Boswell, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), son of Edwin Timothy Dwight and Emma Hunter. The 1910 Federal Census for Hunter, Oklahoma (Choctaw County) shows Simon T. Dwight, an Indian (native American), age 11, born in Oklahoma; living with his father, Edwin Dwight, age 38, born in Oklahoma; and his mother, Emma, age 34, born in Oklahoma. Also living in the household were Simon's siblings: Thomas L. Dwight, age 13; Edwin B. Dwight, age 10; Hunter Dwight, age 6; and Max A. Dwight, age 3; all born in Oklahoma.
The World War I Draft Registration Cards show that Simon Turner Dwight registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Hugo, Oklahoma (Choctaw County). He gave his full name; his age as 20; his birthdate as April 19, 1898; his current address as Boswell, Oklahoma (Choctaw County); his occupation as a truck driver; and his nearest relative as his mother, Mrs. Edwin T. Dwight of Boswell, Oklahoma.
The 1924 Ardmore, Oklahoma City Directory shows Simon T. Dwight and his wife, Ellen, living at 116 C northwest.
Nora and Simon had a daughter, Naomi Lee Dwight, born about 1925 in Oklahoma.
Nora died February 21, 1927 in Oklahoma and was buried in the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). Burial information was derived from Holmes Funeral Home records.
The 1930 Federal Census for Los Angeles District 1, California (Los Angeles County) shows Simon Dwight, a widower, an oil field pipefitter, age 31, born in Oklahoma; living with his brother, Max A. Dwight, a bank messenger, age 22, born in Oklahoma. Also living in the household was Simon's daughter, Naomi Dwight, age 6, born in Oklahoma; Simon's mother, Emma Dwight, age 56, born in Oklahoma; Simon's brother, Hunter B. Dwight, a garage driver, age 25, born in Oklahoma; and Simon's aunt, Mary J. King, a cake baker in a bakery, age 57, born in Oklahoma.
The 1940 Federal Census for Los Angeles District 1, California (Los Angeles County) shows Simon Dwight, a widower, a WPA laborer, age 42, born in Oklahoma; living with his mother, Emma Dwight, age 67, born in Oklahoma. Also living in the household was Simon's daughter, Naomi Dwight, age 15, born in Oklahoma; and Simon's brother, Hunter Dwight, a nursery gardener, age 37, born in Oklahoma.
Simon died at age 44 on June 14, 1942 in the Phoenix Indian Sanitorium in Phoenix, Arizona (Maricopa County). His death certificate states that he was removed and shipped back to Durant, Oklahoma on July 3, 1942. His burial place is not yet known.
