US Congressman. Graduating from Yale College in 1823, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1826. Establishing a legal practice in Amherst, Massachusetts, he also served in both the Massachusetts State House of Representatives and State Senate. He was elected to represent Massachusetts' 10th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1853 to 1855. He was the father of poet Emily Dickinson.
