LEWISBURG — Reginald E. Gilmore, 78, of Lewisburg, departed his earthly life in the early morning hours of Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, following a short illness at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

He was born May 12, 1927, at Parsons, and was extraordinarily devoted to his two daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth, married to Warren Bagley of Maryville, Tenn., and Patricia, married to Col. Richard W. Thomas of Carlisle, Pa.

R.E. graduated from Parsons High School and then served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he attended college and graduated from West Virginia University. He moved to Lewisburg about 1950 and always claimed that God put a little extra beauty in the Greenbrier Valley. During his career, he worked for the West Virginia Department of Health and West Virginia Department of Welfare, retiring as area administrator of the local West Virginia Department of Human Services. In the mid-1960s he and several prominent citizens of the area were instrumental in creating Greenbrier Manor.

Mr. Gilmore was the last of the original members of the Board of Directors.

He had been a member of the BPO Elks for 43 years, a 50-year member of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, AF and AM, and a Shriner.

In addition to his love of children and dogs, he was an avid supporter of ‘sound' walking horses, being a lifetime member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' & Exhibitors' Association. In 2002 and 2003 he had a naturally shod Champion Pleasure walking horse, Cash on the Barrel.

The family invites the friends he treasured so much to share memories and fellowship with them from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in a meeting room at the Elks Club on Route 219 north of Lewisburg.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Elizabeth Chapel Cemetery, Hoke's Mill Road, Organ Cave, with the Rev. Ron Miller officiating.

Arrangements are by Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg.
