Charles Lecocq
Birth: Jun. 3, 1832
Death: Oct. 24, 1918

Composer. He was a prolific French creator of operetta. His music is noted for its tunefulness, delicate scoring and skillful use of rhythm to reinforce comic situations. "La Fille de Madame Angot" (1873) is by far his most popular work. Alexander Charles Lecocq was born in Paris, and studied at the Conservatory under Halevy and Bazin. In 1856 he shared first prize with Georges Bizet in an operetta competition sponsored by Jacques Offenbach; his entry, "Le Docteur miracle", was staged by Offenbach in 1857. From then on he stuck to the genre but it was several years before he enjoyed a genuine hit with "Fleur de the" (1868). "La Fille de Madame Angot" ran for 400 consecutive performances and continues to hold the stage today. After Offenbach's death in 1880 Lecocq was promoted as his "heir" in Paris, and while he had several more successes he never produced another score to rival the triumph of "Madame Angot". His 50 other operettas include "Les Cent Vierges" (1872), "Les Pres Saint-Gervais" (1874), "Le Petite Marife" (1875), "Le Jour et la Nuit" (1881), and "Le Canir ci la main" (1882). He also wrote a ballet, "Le Cygne" (1899). Lecocq retired in 1903 because he did not like new musical trends, and when he died at 86 he had outlived the Golden Age of operetta, at least in France, by two decades. (bio by: Robert Edwards)
