Dr Leo Louis Martello
Birth: Sep. 26, 1930, USA
Death: Jun. 29, 2000
New York
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA

Author, graphologist, lecturer, and activist of Pagan and gay rights. Though raised in a Catholic environment, he had a growing fascination with more Pagan interests even as a child and began to study the Tarot and palmistry early in his life, which led to radio appearances at the age of 16. Upon his move two years later to New York City and attending college to major in psychology, his cousins, who had long been observing him, approached him with the revelation that he was descended from Sicilian Witches. He was then initiated into their coven of the Strega Tradition on September 26, 1951. 18 years later, in 1969, he came out of the broom closet publicly to educate others about the truth of Witchcraft and also became an initiate of other traditions, such as Gardnerian and Alexandrian. Being the first widely-known Witch to defend and support paid legal holidays for Wiccans and legally incorporated, tax-exempt Wiccan churches, he sought to further ensure the legal and religious rights of fellow Wiccans by creating such organizations as the Witches International Craft Association, the Witches Liberation Movement, the Witches Anti-Defamation League (known later as the Witches Anti-Discrimination Lobby), and helping to set up the Universal Federation of Pagans. He continued to reach out to others until his death by way of his books, speaking at major Pagan gatherings, and offering help whenever it was needed. Four months after his passing, a memorial service was held in October at the Gay and Lesbian Center in New York City. (bio by: AmandaJH)
