son of Stephen F. Chadwick - June Smith per death record, but son of Stephen Fowler Chadwick and Jane Ann Smith per his biography as a justice of the Washington state supreme court. His father was Oregon secretary of state and governor. He married Emma Plummer on Mar 2 1887.
He was mayor of Colfax 1891-93, state land commissioner 1894-1897, sat on the Superior Court 1900-1908, and was on the Washington supreme court 1908-1919, serving as chief justice in 1919.
