ELIZABETH "BETTY" NUNLEY

Elizabeth was a "left behind" Chicamaka Indian girl and adopted by "William" Nunley(1774-1859)during the removal of all indians in the territory. She was raised as a "white" child to avoid being transferred to an Oklahoma reservation. Coincidently, she married Willis Nunley in 1849, also a "left behind" indian boy who was adopted by William's cousin, "William B." Nunley(1801-1889). She and Willis had three children prior to her death in 1855(approx.). They were Sarah(1850-1915},Mary(1853-1881)and William B.(1855-1929). Records show she and her brother Jesse, were located in the area called Northcutt Cove which coincided with the time of her death, as Willis and his father were soldiers of the Civil War. Willis later re-married and is buried in the Armstrong Cemetery in Irving College, Tn. with his second wife, Nancy. Elizabeth and William B.(father-in-law) are buried in the Nunley Cemetery in Northcutt Cove. and she has no marker.
