Richard Stark after a lingering illness, died at his home in Amherst township Dec. 9th of dropsy and was buried in the Highland cemetery on Saturday, Rev. Perry of Lanesboro officiating. Services were held at 1 p.m. at the Highland church.

Deceased was born in Springfield, Otsego Co., New York, April 28th 1827. In the year 1848 he was married to Miss Mary Shadbolt. They then emigrated to Wisconsin in the year 1858, residing there two years, then came on to Minnesota and settled in Amherst township. In the year 1866 he was left alone with 4 children, 1 son and 3 daughters, Mr. Robt. Stark of Castlewood S.D., Mesdames Leonard Weed [sic] and Milo Banks of this county and Mrs. George Varney of Columbia, Wis. In a few years after, he was married to Miss Kathryn Sample who survives him.

He was respected by all who knew him, a friend to everyone and universal sympathy is extended to the sorrowing relatives. Old Pioneers Pass Away

After a long illness, the venerable Richard Stark of Highland died peacefully on Wednesday evening this week. He reached a ripe old age, being 84 years old on April 28th last. The late Mr. Stark was born in New York state, but came west as a young man. Forty nine years ago he came to Fillmore county and has ever since lived on the old homestead near Highland. He was honored and respected by everyone, and his memory will remain green with many for years to come.

He is survived by his aged widow, one son and three daughters. The children are Robert Stark of Watertown, S.D., Mrs. Abbie Weed and Jennie Banks of Fountain, Minn., and Mrs. Martha Varney of Columbia, Wis. There is also an adopted son, Clayton Stark of Williston, N.D. All these were expected to return home in time for the funeral, which will take place from the home this Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Lanesboro Leader, December 12, 1908
