American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the medal on January 13, 1898 for his actions as a private in Company E, 5th Iowa Cavalry, US Army, on July 29, 1864 at the Battle of Brown's Mill near Newman, Georgia. He joined the Union Army following the outbreak of the war and was seriously wounded in 1863 following an engagement with Confederate forces in Tennessee that resulted in the loss of vision in his left eye. In July 1864 he was serving under General Edward M. McCook Division during the Atlanta Campaign. Following his heroics at the Battle of Brown's Mill, he was captured by Confederate forces and sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia, where he remained until the end of the war. He then returned to his hometown and became a successful businessman. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "When nearly surrounded by the enemy, captured a Confederate soldier, and with the aid of a comrade who joined him later, captured 4 other Confederate soldiers, disarmed the 5 prisoners, and brought them all into the Union lines."
