Mollie was orphaned by her father when she was about
three months old. Apparently her Uncle Robert Rankin took charge of the care for her, brother to her father.
Mollie's mother remarried shortly thereafter to
Phillip Sparrow.

Mollie was abt 8-9yrs old and then found in DeWitt County
for a land partition suit of her parents James and
Susan Oralie Rivers Rankin, however Mollie was not mentioned in her father's probate records October 1887 when he died?
There has been a story told among Rankin descendants one
of the men met an early death when he was climbing a fence and his rifle or shotgun went off accidently killing him, so most feel it was Mollie's dad, James.
After James died Mollie's mother Elizabeth Jane Day having married Phillip Sparrow moved on down to Houston Harris Co. Elizabeth and Phillip had no known children.

Some added info that has helped to understand this gal and her family a bit better, as they did have some hardships,
so am appreciative for this following info:

''In the 1900 household of Mollie's Uncle Robert Thomas Rankin is her grandmother Irene A Rankin, mother of her father James M Rankin who died Oct 1887, with Mollie E Rankin being born July 21 1887.
My great grandmother is Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Rankin, sister of Robert Thomas Rankin, James M Rankin and
daughter of Irene A Rankin.
I feel James M Rankin named his daughter after his sister Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Rankin, particularly as James M Rankin as a young single adult, listed as J M Rankin lived with his now married sister M.E. "Mollie" Rankin Thompson Parker County Texas in the 1880 census, indicating a closeness between the two siblings.
This extended family lived in the four county area of DeWitt, Gonzales, Lavaca, and Goliad Counties from the late 1840s to 1900 with the strange exception of the 1880 census. The yet to be married James M Rankin, father of Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Rankin, is living out of that four county area with his married sister Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Rankin Thompson in Parker County Texas.
DeWitt County Texas is the birth county of the 1887 Mollie Rankin's aunt, Mary Elizabeth Rankin Thompson and Uncle Robert Thomas Rankin with whom Mollie was living with as
an orphaned niece 1900. Feel free to contact me.Thank you for all of your great work.Respectfully,Mike''
