Deane Chatterton, 91, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 11, 2011, at the Yates Center Health Center.

He was born April 23, 1920, at Colony, Kansas, the son of Earl M. and Clara M. (Johnson) Chatterton.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, entering in September 1943 and being discharged in April 1946.

He and Cathrine Williams were married on June 8, 1947.

They made their home in Clarksville, Arkansas and Fredonia, Kansas before settling in Yates Center in 1949.

Deane was a switchman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and an agent for State Farm Insurance. He retired in 1983.

While in Yates Center he served one term on the Yates Center Library Board and delivered Meals-On-Wheels. He was also available to drive many people to their out of town doctor or hospital appointments, to airports, or to take people to see their loved ones at hospitals.

He enjoyed having coffee daily with his friends, collecting many items, such as license plates, insulators, and pens, to name a few. He was also a very devoted animal lover.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers George, Roy, Ellis, and his twin-brother Arthur Gene; and his sister, Velma.

He leaves his wife, Cathrine J. Chatterton of the home in Yates Center, KS; a son, Mike Chatterton and wife Isabel, of Overland Park, KS; a daughter, Trudy Tenpenny and husband Gary, of Topeka, KS; four granddaughters, Christa Tenpenny, Amy Tenpenny, Silvia Chatterton, and Kara Tenpenny; and many many friends.

Mr. Chatterton donated his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center for research.

A memorial service will be heldSaturday, September 24, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Yates Center.
