James was a minister in many congregations of the Church of Christ. He served his Lord at the congregations of Hidden Valley Church of Christ and Denver Harbor Church of Christ in Houston, as well as the congregations in Navasota and Runge, Texas. James served as elder at Willowbrook Church and was a current member of the 249 Church of Christ in Houston, Texas.
Married to Hazel M. Carley on November 6, 1941, James was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II in Panama and in the Aleutian Islands from 1942 to 1945. His first profession was as a teacher of young minds in the Houston Independent School District at Burbank Jr. High School, Fonville Jr. High School, and Reagan High School. He began a second career in the office supply and printing industry in 1969, eventually becoming a business owner in the Houston area.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James Douglas Fuller I and Gertrude Covington Fuller, as well as his brother, Norman C. Fuller, and sisters Maxie Tucker, Billie Fuller and Allie Mae Kiser. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Carley Fuller, and his children, James D. Fuller III, Robert K. Fuller I, Peggy J. Freeman and husband Bill, and Gayle Fuller, all of Houston. He is survived by one sister, Sue Bruce, of Lufkin, Texas. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Keith Freeman, and wife, Andi, Kirk Freeman, Robert Fuller II and wife Rebecca, Kay Griffin and husband William, Karol Round and husband Sam, Russell Fuller, Erin Fuller, James D. Fuller IV, and Ryan Fuller and wife Heather. He is survived by three great-grandchildren, Megann Freeman, Logan Fuller, and Alyssa Fuller. He is also survived by many cousins, as well as nieces and nephews extending to three generations. He will be missed by many brothers and sisters in Christ.
Visitation will be on Monday, June 16, 2003, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at 12:30 p.m. Both events will be at the American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas, with burial to follow at the Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. Brother Bob Johnson and Brother Hilton Merritt will officiate.
