OAKLAND, MAINE, Margaret Sue Hurd, 100, of Oakland, died peacefully at home Monday, Dec. 10, 2001.
She was born June 28, 1901, in the Oakland house that her grandfather, Samuel Mosher, built, and where she subsequently lived much of her adult life.
The daughter of Guy L. Mosher, of Oakland and Sarah F. (Mower) Mosher, of Corinna, she had an exciting and interesting life. After graduating from Oakland High School and Thomas Business College, she worked during the '20s, in the office of the Cascade Woolen Mill, and later as the accountant for Greeley and Getchell Oil from 1953-1972.
A lifetime member of the United Baptist Church of Oakland, she was church treasurer and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She worked with the church Ladies' Circle and the Missionary Group for many years. She was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star, the Cascade Grange, the Oakland Historical Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary, holding various offices within each organization. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for 75 years, she held offices in the Dorcas Dearborn Chapter of Oakland, and the Fort Halifax Chapter of Winslow.
She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Mark A. Hurd, who passed away in 1983; a son, William A. Hurd; a daughter, Elizabeth A. (Hurd) Poole; and a granddaughter, Cindy R. St. Peter.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Hurd) Merrow, of Bedford, N.H., and Ruth (Hurd) Bickford, of Oakland; and a sister, Rosalie Reynolds, of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the Unity Baptist Church, Oakland, followed by interment at Lakeview Cemetery.
