Edmund"Ed" "EJ" married Eliza Ann Kirby October 19, 1857. He was a Captain of Company E, 15th Cavalry Regiment, from Dade County during the Civil War.

In the 1880 Dade County, MO Census, after the death of his wife and infant daughter in 1877, he is age 44 and living at a boarding house in Dadeville, working in general merchandising. Howard Morris,his 10 year old son, is listed with Edmund's sister Ann and husband Edgar Clark and family just a few doors down. Edmund and Eliza also have a daughter Lillie.

He partnered with his brother-in-law Edgar Clark and E.S. Hughes owning a general store in Dadeville until 1881. A family friend writes that "he took down with rheumatism and drew a larger pension until his death." Isabelle Snoddy who was his housekeeper and nurse became his second wife.
