Obituaries

S. Stanley Hawbaker

S. Stanley Hawbaker, 72, 11977 Main Street, Fort Loudon, PA, died Thursday evening at the Chambersburg Hospital. He had been a patient since Wednesday after receiving injuries from a logging accident near his home. Hawbaker has been a prominent Fort Loudon businessman since 1945.
He was born July 11, 1911, near Greencastle, the son of the late Charles T. and Clemma Coldsmith Hawbaker. Hawbaker was a Protestant.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Elliott Hawbaker; a daughter, Sonja Grewal, California; two sons, Edwin Hawbaker, Mercersburg, and Gary Hawbaker, Elizabethtown; four sisters, Florene Stumbaugh, Greencastle; Anna Mary Myers, Chambersburg; Margaret Nett, Gettysburg, R.I; and Violet Swartz, Gettysburg, R.I.; and four brothers, George Hawbaker, Biglerville; Lyman Hawbaker, St. Paul, Minn; Howard Hawbaker, Gettysburg, R.I.; and Lloyd Hawbaker, Gettysburg, R.I.; and four grandchildren.

Hawbaker, an avid trapper and hunter, turned his hobby and sport into a business called the Hawbaker Trading Post in 1936. The post was located near Greencastle. The business was moved to Fort Loudon in 1945 and renamed S. Stanley Hawbaker and Son Firm. He became inactive in the business in 1977, at which time he devoted his interest to wildlife and conservation.

Hawbaker was a life-time member of the Pennsylvania Trappers Association, a 25 year old member of the Isaac Walton League of America, a member of NATA and an honorary member of the National Conservation Turkey Association.
Funeral services will be held Monday at the Lininger Funeral Home, Mercersburg, with Rev. Marjorie Burket officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Stenger Hill Cemetery, Fort Loudon.

The family will receive friends at the Lininger Funeral Home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
