The son of Congressman Francis M. Bristow of Kentucky, he was admitted to the bar in 1853 and practiced law with his father. He helped recruit the 25th Kentucky Infantry in 1861, and fought at Fort Donelson, Fort Henry, Pittsburgh Landing, and Shiloh, rising to the rank of Major General. After the Civil War, he was appointed first Solicitor General by President Grant, serving from 1870 to 1872, and Secretary of the Treasury, serving from 1874 to 1876. While Secretary of the Treasury, he was instrumental in smashing the Whiskey Ring, and in 1876 he was a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. (bio by: Garver Graver)
