John Hochhalter was born in Glueckstal, South Russia on July 20, 1882. His family was originally from Germany. He married Albina Lehr on January 13, 1910 at Tripp, Hutchinson County, South Dakota. Albina was born February 4, 1887 at Tripp the daughter of Valentine and Katharina (Voegele) Lehr. The Lehr family too was originally from German via South Russia.
They had at least twelve children who were born in South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana. The children are Fred (1910-2012); Adolph (1912-2005); Julia (1914-1990) (Lawrence Hewitt); Gideon (1916-2001); Katherine (1917-2006) burial unknown (Don Niles); Michael (1919-1987); Andrew (1921-1996); Christina (1922-2010); Peter (1924-2001); John (1926-?) burial unknown; Edna (1928-1929) burial unknown; and William (1930-1992).
The 1930 US census shows John and Albina Hochhalter with eleven children and owing and living on a farm near Glasgow, Valley County, Montana. Their daughter Edna had died in 1929.

John Hockhalter, 62, farmer for almost 30 years in the Baylor community, died in a Glasgow hospital Wednesday night at 10 o’clock (April 4, 1945). He had been ill for more than a month. The body is at the Holland Chapel. Mr. Hockhalter was born in Russia July 20, 1882. The family came to Valley County in 1916 and Mr. Hockhalter has since engaged in farming. Mrs. Hockhalter died May 22, 1940. Eleven children survive, Fred of Harlein, Aldolph Hockhalter of Baltimore, Maryland, Mrs. Julia Hueth of Baltimore, Maryland, Gideon Hockhalter and Michael Hockhalter, with the army in the Philippines, Mrs. Kate Freitag of Seattle, Washington, Christina Hockhalter of Seattle, Washington, John Hockhalter with the army in the Pacific theater and William Hockhalter of Glasgow. Another daughter, Edna, died April 2, 1929. Also surviving are a brother, Fred of Woodward, North Dakota and a sister in South Dakota.
Funeral services for John Hockhalter, 64, Baylor farmer for the past 30 years, who died in a local hospital April 4, 1945, were held in the Holland chapel at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon. The Rev. C. A. Wall officiated and burial was in the Glasgow Cemetery. Pall bearers were Robert Eayrs, Mark Watson, Dave Pecora, Sam Fuhrman, Roy Wright and Emanuel Fauth. Mr. Hockhalter was a native of Russia but had farmed in the Baylor community since 1916. Twelve children survive, including four sons in service. Mr. Hockhalter was married in Tripp, South Dakota January 13, 1910. His wife preceded him in death in May, 1940.
