Major League Baseball Player. Pitcher Warren Hacker grew up wanting to be like his father, who was a coal miner. His father insisted that he take up and pursue baseball instead. Hacker began his career with the Cubs in 1948, but it was not until 1952 that he solidified himself in the Cubs rotation, going 15-9, with 2.58 ERA. The next season he led the NL in losses with 19. The good-natured Hacker was a knuckleball/sinkerball pitcher, who came within two outs of a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Braves on May 21, 1955. He was traded by the Cubs along with Don Hoak and Pete Whisenant to the Reds for Elmer Singleton and Ray Jablonski on November 13, 1956, and then claimed on waivers by the Phillies on June 26, 1957, where he spent parts of the next two seasons. After several years in the minors, he finished up his career in 1961 as a reliever with the White Sox where he went 3-3 with a 3.77 ERA and 8 saves. He accrued a career record of 62-89 with a 4.21 ERA. He was the uncle of former St. Louis Cardinals Coach Rich Hacker.
