| Birth: | May 20, 1896 Gainesville Sumter County Alabama, USA | | Death: | Jun. 28, 1950 Tuskegee Macon County Alabama, USA | Burl "Jaybird" Coleman, an outstanding blues harmonica, was born in Gainesville, Alabama. He learned to play the harmonica as a young boy, and he honed his skills as a musician while serving in the U.S. Army during World War I. After leaving the Army, he joined the Birmingham Jug Band and travelled with the "Rabbit Foot Minstrels" show. Coleman made his first recordings in 1927 on the Gennett, Silvertone, and Black Patti Record labels in Birmingham, Alabama. During the 1930's, he toured throughout Alabama, and he also made further recordings for the OKeh and Columbia Record labels in Atlanta, Georgia. Coleman's musical career declined during the late 1930's through the late 1940's. During the 1940's, he occassionally performed on the streets of Birmingham. He continued working outside of music and occasionally making street side performances until his death from cancer in 1950 at the age of 54. (bio by: Adam Maroney)
