He served during the Civil War as an officer in the 16th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery, being mustered in as Captain and commander of Company D on December 7, 1863. He was promoted to Major on August 5, 1864, and was honorably mustered out on August 21, 1865. He was elected as a Republican to represent Missouri's 12th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1897 to 1901.
