US Congressman. Grandson of Congressman Erastus Corning. Brother of Lieutenant Governor Edwin Corning. Uncle of Albany Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd. Attended Albany Academy for Boys. Graduate, St. Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire, 1891. Graduate, Yale University, 1895. College athlete, member of cricket and crew teams. Member, Psi Upsilon fraternity. Member, Wolf's Head, secret campus society. Married Anna Cassen (1883-1943) of Rensselaer, October 31, 1910. Marriage disapproved by family since Anna had been married and divorced, had a son, and was Catholic. One daughter, Mary. Prominent in several Corning family businesses. Raised prize winning sheep, cows and horses. Owner with wife of Thanksgiving, winner of 1938 Travers Stakes. Owner with wife of Attention, which beat Triple Crown winner Whirlaway in 1941's Arlington Classic. Founder, Albany Felt Company. Principal, Ludlum Steel Company. Vice President, State Bank of Albany. Board of Directors, Mechanics and Farmers Savings Bank. Trustee, Albany Rural Cemetery. Worked with brother Edwin and Albany's O'Connell brothers to take control of county Democratic party, and then defeat established Republican organization of William Barnes. Elected to Congress as a Democrat, 1922, and reelected six times, serving March 4, 1923 to January 3, 1937. Was not a candidate for renomination in 1936 because conservative views did not fit with national Democratic party's pro-New Deal support of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Sponsor of successful legislation creating Port of Albany and Albany federal office building for upstate New York. Returned to business interests. Died just seven weeks after wife's death from cancer. Member, Fort Orange Club, Albany Country Club, Schuyler Meadows Country Club, Saratoga Golf Club, North Woods Golf Club. Vestryman, Trinity Episcopal Church. Albany Felt Company is today known as Albany International, the world's largest producer of products for the commercial forming, pressing and drying of paper. (bio by: Bill McKern)
