OBITUARY

MRS. M.M. WELLS IS SUMMONED BY SILENT HOST

Shortly after nine o'clock on Thursday evening, Mrs. Margaret M. Wells, pioneer of Contra Costa county and mother of County Clerk J.H. Wells and Deputy County Clerk Sam. C. Wells, passed away at her home at 5672 Oak Grove Ave, Oakland after a gradual decline extending over several months.

Although the well known pioneer matron had been in failing health for some time, she was not believed to be critically ill and her death Thursday evening came as a shock to the members of the family and friends. During the day she was reported as feeling improved and sat up for several hours. Late in the afternoon she too a sudden turn for the worse and sank rapidly until overtaken by death shortly after nine o'clock.

Mrs. Wells was 68 years of age born in Illinois in 1851 and leaving for California with her parents behind an ox team at the age of two years. Her parents first settled on the old Government ranch near the present town of Clyde, later removing to Sonoma county.

When almost twenty years of age she was married to Philip Wells. They purchased a ranch near Concord in the Ygnacio Valley where they made their home for many years. To this union there were six children born, Eva, wife of C.A. Tarwater of Concord, Lillie of Oakland, Myrtle, wife of John Sutton of Berkeley, Ernest who resides in Portland, Oregon, Samuel C of Martinez, deputy county clerk and Jasper H. Wells, county clerk.

Philip Wells, husband of the deceased passed away in 1890. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Wells continued to live on the farm for a number of years, later removing to Concord to reside and about four years ago she went to Oakland to make her home, residing with her daughter, Lillie.

Mrs. Wells was one of the well known pioneers of Contra Costa county. She and her family have been active figures in the history of this section from the early days and the friends and acquaintances of the esteemed matron, who are numbered by the hundreds throughout the entire county, will grieve to learn of her passing.

The funeral arrangements are being made under the direction of the H.J. Curry parlors of this city. It was announced on Friday morning that the services would probably be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 from her late home in Berkeley, thence overland by automobile to Martinez where interment will be made in the Alhambra Cemetery.-
