BONNIE SUE POWELL CLEMENTS
Bonnie Sue Powell Clements, 76, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.
She married her husband of 52 years, James Lucius Clements Jr. in 1957 in Birmingham, Ala., where they met while both were attending Howard College.
The daughter of Annie Sue Joyner Powell and Arthur H. Powell, Mrs. Clements was born November 21, 1932, and was raised in Butler County, Ala.,where she graduated from Georgiana High School in 1951. She worked for many years in the banking industry in both Greenville, Ala. and later in Birmingham.
Mrs. Clements was devoted to her family and friends and to her church. She served for many years as church hostess at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Birmingham and enjoyed being a part of a hand bell choir. She and James enjoyed taking RV trips with their family, square dancing, and most of all, Alabama football Roll Tide.
She was an avid quilter and made beautiful porcelain dolls for family and friends. Her favorite time of year was Christmas and she enjoyed decorating for the holiday season.
Mrs. Clements was also proud to be a Grand Matron and member of the Order of the Eastern Star. After moving from Birmingham to Trenton, Ga. in 1989, Mrs. Clements attended Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga.
Mrs. Clements is predeceased by her parents, her brother, Hilton Powell ; and her sister, Margaret Maxine Medley.
She is survived by her husband, James Clements Jr.; her son James L. Clements III (Ginger), of Huntsville, Ala.; and her daughter, Melody C. (Britt) Gaston, of Trenton. Mrs. Clements was the proud grandmother of Rebekah Clements, Amie Clements, Elizabeth Clements, Lori Clements, Brittain Gaston and Meredith Gaston. Mrs. Clementss surviving siblings are Jean Powell Alverson, of Mobile, Ala., Harold (Janel) Powell, of Greenville, Ala., and A. Wendell (Faye) Powell, of Greenville, Ala. She also had many nieces and nephews who loved her and were equally loved in return.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Robby Gallaty officiating.
Interment followed at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., in honor of Lori Clements, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105-3678.
