US Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1801, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1804 and commenced to practice law in Poughkeepsie, New York. From 1810 to 1811, he was Surrogate of Dutchess County, New York. In 1813, he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth Congress, serving until 1815. After his term, he was a member of the New York State Assembly (1816, 1818-20) and Attorney General of New York in 1819. He was again elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth Congress, serving (1827-28). He then resigned his seat in Congress, was appointed chief judge of the Superior Court of New York City and served until his death at age 73. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
