Veteran Topeka Teacher Dies

Extended Illness Fatal to C.H. Hepworth
C.H. Hepworth, 67, for the last 24 years vice-principal of Topeka high, died at his home, 1607 Boswell avenue, late Thursday after an extended illness.

Born May 6, 1875 at Volonia, Mich., Mr. Hepworth came to Burlingame, Kan., in 1876, where he was graduated from the grade and high schools. He attended Washburn college, Kansas State Teachers' college of Emporia and Baker university, receiving his master's degree from Washburnand also took postgraduate work at Colorado university. He was married to Charlotte Coffman in 1903.
To Garfield School in 1909
In 1909 Mr. Hepworth came to Topeka as principal of Garfield school. In 1912 he was transferred to Topeka high as teacher in history and manager of athletics. In 1918 he was made vice-principal of the high school, a position he held continuously until recently, when illness forced him to retire. In addition to his duties as vice-principal, he had been director of the night school since 1926, and director of adult education since 1936.

The principal hobby of Mr. Hepworth and his family was collecting antiques, especially glassware and clocks. His favorite sport was hunting.
An Active Mason
He was a member of all Masonic bodies, the Co-operative club, the Hi-twelve club and the Westminster Presbyterian church.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Samuel Richard Hepworth, of Topeka; a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Kathryn Fuller, of Lyons; two grandsons, Richard, and Edmund Fuller Jr., also of Lyons; two brothers, Lewelyn Hepworth, of Kansas City, Mo., and Richard Hepworth, of Burlingame; three sisters, Mrs. Nicholas G. Bird, of Wichita, Miss Cora Hepworth, teacher in the Topeka public schools, and Miss Marian Hepworth, of the University of Idaho.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wall-Diffenderfer mortuary. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
Active pallbearers are: Sol D. Dice, J.H. Hoshner, A.H. Winter, John H. Linn, J.W. Dickson and Paul Sweet.
Honorary pallbearers are: Eli G. Foster, W.H. Greider, L.D. Whittemore, A.J. Stout, W.G. McGaw, and Dr. H.B. Hogeboom.
