Obituary: The Baltimore Sun January 5, 1901

The funeral of Gen. John Summerfield Berry, who died Thursday, will take place from his late home, 1500 Eutaw Place at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. Dr. Andrew Longacre, of New York; Rev. Luther B. Wilson of Washington; Rev. Dr. John Lanahan and Rev. Mr. Ridgely, pastor of Summerfield Methodist Episcopal Church will conduct the services. The interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

The honorary pallbearers will be German H.Hunt, John E. Hurst, James Baily, F. C. Latrobe, Juddge Thomas J. Morris, Jacob H. Taylor, Dr. Henry M. Wilson, Judge D. Giraud Wright.

The active pallbearers chose are R. Berry Bull, B.H.D.Bull, Hugh Brent, Clarendon I. T. Gould, Franklin W. Levering, Clinton G. Morgan, J. Hurst Purnell, John E. Reese.

Besides being a successful Businessman and an untiring worker for the good of his city and state General Berry was one of the most prominent lay members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. At the time of his death he was president of the board of trustees of the Home of the Friendless, Druid Hill and Lafayette avenues and president of the board of trustees of the Home of the Aged of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Fulton avenue and Franklin street, and for many years he was recording steward for Summerfield Circuit. He also, up to the time of this death, looked after the interests of the chapel at Calverton, of which he had been recording steward for more than 30 years. In the quadrennial General Conferences he was frequently a delegate to represent the Baltimore Annual Conference. When in the city he attended Mt. Vernon Place Church and while at "Dukeland" his country place on Calverton road he was a regular attendent of Summerfield Church, where he held his membership.
