He was the great great great grandson (on his mother's side) of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition and also the great grandson (and named for) turn-of-the-century writer Edward S. Ellis. After Ned's parents divorced, his father married the former Mary Harvey Charles of North Carolina. Ned, his twin sister Julia Clark Jones, sister Patricia and stepmother Mary followed as Col. Jones moved from one military assignment to the next. Ned settled in Detroit, Michigan.
