Wilburn "Wild Bill" Carr Jr, 75, passed into the arms of Jesus on the wings of an eagle on September 8th at Carolinas Medical Center. Bill was born in Gastonia, the eldest son of seven to the late Wilburn Carr, Sr and Essie Akridge Carr.
Bill graduated from Ashley High School in Gastonia and N.C Vocational Textile School. His greatest accomplishments were the love of his family, Nascar family and friends. Bill was an accomplished pilot receiving numerous awards throughout his forty year career with multiple Nascar teams.
Bill was a decorated Korean War Veteran and Purple Heart and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Bill served as a member of the 101st Airborne Division with the US Army Screaming Eagles. Bill later served numerous years with the National Guard and American Legion.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Aileen Huffstetler Carr; six children, Shirleen Hanson and husband Earl of Gastonia, Adele Oliver of Dallas, Jeff Carr and wife Pam of Gastonia, Lori Adler and husband Allan of Gastonia, Jada Winters and husband Jon of Gastonia, Amber Simril of Mount Holly(Amber was married to Eddie Simril, son of R. W. Simril and Glenda Wilson). Eighteen grandchildren and Twenty four great-grandchildren.
He was preceeded in death by Blair Carr, Luke Carr, Larry Carr and Carolyn Carr Blake. He is survived by Jimmy Carr and wife Sandy of Gastonia, Delores Thomas and husband Ray of Walkertown. Long time friend and co-pilot David Stroud.
Family will recieve friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 375 Woodlawn Avenue, Mount Holly from 7:00p - 9:00p on Saturday and other times at the home of Shirleen Hanson 1716 Alpine Lane, Gastonia. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday at 4:00pm at First Baptist Church, 400 West 1st Street, Lowell (where he was a member for 54 years) with Rev. Jack Fleming and Rev. Dr. David Irish officiating services. Entombment will follow in the Sereneity Mausoleum at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont.
Family expresses special thanks for the excellent care and services received by the physicians and staff at Medical Intensive Care and Medical Progressive Care during his stay. We would also like to thank Neonatal Intensive and Neonatal Progressive for accomodating and providing comfort measures for the family during his stay.
Bill was a very loving, caring and devoted friend, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather that will be missed by many. His bounce, smile and laugh will live forever in our hearts.
