Hazel was the youngest daughter and 14th child of 16 born to Romii (Beale) and Will Overbey. She married Junior Williams around 1941; they had two daughters.

Three years after Junior's death in 1965, Hazel met Carl Eldon Crandall at an American Legion dance. They married in July 1968. After 20 years as a career Army man, he retired and they returned to his roots Wisconsin. Eventually they returned to Virginia to be near her children and their grandchildren.

Hazel died on 16 Oct 2001, at the age of 82, in Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Virginia. She was cremated by Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Smithfield, Virginia. Carl kept her ashes.

Hazel was the last surviving child of Willie and Romii Overbey's sixteen children. Her first husband Junior Williams and her first granddaughter Debbie Bragg, predeceased her. She was survived by her second husband Carl, her daughters Sandra and Joan, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Carl's health in steady decline, he died in 2004. Their ashes were entombed in St. Luke's (Memorial Park) Cemetery in Smithfield, Virginia.
