Daughter of Fay & Edith Adams Ashline

Dorthy Eileen Dyer, 84, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

She was the daughter of Fay and Edith (Adams) Ashline, and was born at Wood Center, Iowa, northeast of Edgewood on February 24, 1927. They moved to Edgewood later and then to Manchester. Dorthy attended school in Manchester, and graduated from Manchester High School. She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon for one year.

Dorthy returned to Manchester and was employed as a telephone operator and for Farmers and Merchants Bank until she married Alfred Gordon Dyer on May 1, 1948. Three children were born to this union. Dorthy also worked as a farm wife, at the Manchester High School hot lunch, and then 18 years as the church secretary at the Manchester United Methodist Church.

Dorthy was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church, belonged to a United Methodist women's circle, was a regular visitor to residents in the Good Neighbor Home, and participated in a local book club. Dorthy and Gordon loved to travel and have been in 46 of the 50 states, Canada and Mexico. They spent 11 winters in Texas, one in Florida, one in Arizona and lots of trips to Colorado to see their son, Paul, and his family.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred Gordon Dyer; two sons, Gordon (Linda) Dyer of Iowa City, and Paul (Martha) Dyer of Durango, Colorado; one daughter, Katherine (John) Cameron of Bettendorf; six grandchildren, Brad (Kali) Fassett of Durango, Colorado, Brian (Kate) Fassett of West Linn, Oregon, Jeff (Jamie) Fassett of San Acacia, New Mexico, Kelli (Steven) Udelhofen of Royal Oak, Michigan, Mary Cameron of Cedar Rapids, and William Cameron of Williamsport, Pennsylvania; and great-grandchildren, McKayla Fassett, Addisyn Fassett, Brock Fassett, Maryann Fassett, Baby Fassett due in October, Ruby Fassett, Clara Fassett and Baby Udelhofen due in November.

Dorthy was preceded in death by her parents, Fay and Edith Ashline; and one sister, Elizabeth Shearer.
