George Stewart, usually known as "G. L." or "Leon", was born on October 7, 1869 in Meredith, near Rural Valley, PA. He was determined to become a dentist, but money was hard to come by. He worked as a teacher and as a milkman to get money for his education. After several years he was able to go to a dental college in Pittsburgh, a school which eventually evolved into the University of Pittsburgh dental school.
After he graduated, he returned to Rural Valley and set up practice. For the first few months, he practiced in the front room of the family home. The front room had previously been Dr. William Aitkins' medical office and has a separate entrance. Later he bought a little building across the street and turned it into a dental office.
G. L. was the town dentist for many years. He was famous for his crowns, bridges and dentures.
He was a very kind and loving father and grandfather
G. L. died of pancreatic cancer on August 15, 1954. He worked almost up until his death.
