His parents were Benjamin F and Catherine B.Cobb HEDDING. When he was 16 he moved to Denver, completed undergraduate studdies and received an appointment to the Naval Academy where he graduated in 1924. As an Ensign he served on the Battleship Maryland BB-46 (later damaged at Pearl Harbor). In 1926 Truman was Designated a Naval Aviator. In 1931 he received a MS Degree from MIT and then went to sea on USS SARATOGA, CV-3 the Navy`s third Aircraft Carrier. The Navy then called him back to Washington DC to serve in Bureau of Aeronautics. Truman`s next billit was a Sea assignment as Squadron commander of Fighting Squarron 2B on the Carrier USS Lexington. He was then promoted to Air Officer and XO of the Carrier USS Essex. In 1943, promoted to Captain and Chief of Staff Commander Carrier Division Three(Fast Carrier Task Force 58) under Vice Adm Mitcher. Truman and Admiral Mitcher executed successful raids on the Gilberts, Kwajalein, Marianas, Truk and Palau. At this point, Hedding was asked by his Boss to choose his replacement. Truman elected 31 knot Burke(later Admiral Arleigh A. BURKE) who had made a name as the best "Tin Can Sailor" in the Navy.
Truman went on to CO USS Valley Forge CV-45 then was assigned shore duty as Chief of Staff, Joint Staff, CinCPac. Promoted to Admiral, and Commander Carrier Division Three in 1955, then back to shore duty in Bureau of Areonautics until retirement in 1959.
