U.S. Senator. He graduated from Shelton College, taught school, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1880 and commenced to practice law in Charleston, West Virginia, in 1882. He also engaged in the newspaper publishing business and was prosecuting attorney of Kanawha County in 1883. In addition, he was chairman of the Democratic State executive committee in 1892 and West Virginia Secretary of State, (1893-97). In 1911, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1917. After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law and the newspaper publishing business until his death at age 81.
