| Birth: | May 14, 1890 | | Death: | Jan. 22, 1980 |  US Congressman. A Republican, he served four terms (1925 to 1933) in the US House of Representatives, representing West Virginia's 1st District. He was defeated for reelection in 1932 and 1934, and ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate in 1940. Bachmann was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. He studied at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, and graduated from West Virginia University's law department in 1915, passing his bar exam that same year. Most of his long life was spent in or near his hometown, where he had a law practice and banking interests. Bachmann served as Ohio County prosecuting attorney (1921 to 1925), on the Wheeling City Council (1939 to 1941), and as Mayor of Wheeling (1947 to 1951). His son, Charles F. Bachmann (1915 - 1983), was also a notable West Virginia politician.
