Ottumwa Optometrist Dr. Pedigo Dead at 71
A local optometrist, who had practiced in Ottumwa for 36 years, died Tuesday. Dr. Fred D. Pedigo, 71, of Agency, died at 3:30 p.m. at the Ottumwa Hospital following an illness of several weeks. He was born September 25, 1900, in Harrodsburg, Indiana, the son of Judd and Mary Mull Pedigo. He was a Navy Veteran of World War I. He was a member of the Ottumwa Elks Club and the American Legion. He was a graduate of the Needles School of Optometry in Kansas City, Missouri in 1923 and practiced in Ottumwa from that time until his retirement in 1968. He was a well-known sports enthusiast and in earlier years trained young men for the Golden Gloves. Surviving are his wife, Mary Louise; two brothers, Ross Pedigo of Chariton and Dr. Ralph Pedigo of Topeka, Kansas; and one sister, Mrs. Gretchen Kanode of Topeka, Kansas. He was preceded in death by one son, Charles, in 1961; and one sister. The service will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Charles T. Rinkel Jr. of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service.
