William H. H. Yakey married Mary Jane Kiger at Royalton, Fairfield Co. Ohio on July 25, 1865. They moved to Shelby Co., Illinois after 1867 but before 1871. During that time William was a farmer (1880 census). The 1900 census list him as a carpenter.
William H. H. Yakey enlisted with A Company, 17th Ohio Infantry on April 22, 1861 and mustered out on August 15, 1861 (this was a 3 month enlistment at the end of which the men, many of which had overstayed their enlistment, were ordered home). The 17th's primary duties were guard-type duties, guarding provision trains, making river expeditions, operating against guerrillas, etc. The company did not lose a single man in action. William then enlisted with the 30th Ohio Infantry on Feb. 8 1862 and mustered out on Jan 8 1865 in Georgia.
The 30th Ohio infantry engaged in action at Antietam, Maryland on September 14-17, 1862, which saw the company's highest casualties of the war with 17 killed and 22 wounded; the seige and Battle of Vicksburg from May 18, 1863 to Jul 4, 1863; the siege and burning of Atlanta from July 22 to August 27, 1864 during Sherman's march to the sea, and a dozen other major and minor campaigns including those at Jackson, Miss on July 14, 1863 and Missionary Ridge, Tenn on November 25, 1863.
