| Birth: | Nov. 18, 1918 | | Death: | Jun. 23, 2003 | Baseball pitcher. He was a former Negro Leagues pitcher who was offered a major-league tryout only to have it rescinded because of his race. A 6-foot-4-inch right-hander with a side arm delivery, he was sometimes called "Dr. Cyclops" because of the thick eyeglasses he wore. He signed a contract with the Newark Eagles in 1938 and played with them for 10 years until his career was interrupted by service in World War II. He pitched the final game of the Negro League World Series in 1946 as Newark defeated the Kansas City Monarchs 3-2. He barnstormed with Sachel Paige's All-Stars in the late 1940s and also played in leagues in Mexico and Canada before retiring from baseball. He returned to school and graduated from college and spent the next 28 years as a sixth-grade teacher in Pleasantville, New Jersey. He should be remembered as someone who had strength of character, not only in baseball but also in what he taught in the classroom and what he brought to the community. (bio by: Ron Moody)
