One of the best men who ever lived in this section was called to his eternal reward at 2 A.M. Saturday. Mr. James Anderson Harris, after 78 years of honorable existence, passed from mortal to immortality and heard the welcome plaudit promised the faithful soldier of the cross. He was born in Madison county of Old Virginia stock and was raised up on a farm. Nearly 51 years ago he married Mrs. Susan Taylor who during all these years has made him a loving and true helpmeet, and who now mourns his departure. Shortly after their marriage they gave their hearts to God and uniting with the Methodist church have since lived up to its highest privileges and teachings. Mr. Harris was one of the fathers of the church here and served it in an official capacity for many years. His house was the home of the preachers and he was the most liberal contributor to the ministry and every good church work.
Forty-six years ago Mr. and Mrs. Harris moved to this county where they have since lived on their farm near town. Energetic and pushing, Mr. Harris amassed quite a fortune in farming and stock trading, which will go unencumbered to his children, of whom seven of the eight born to him are living: Mrs. S.H. Baughman, Mrs. G.P. Bright, Mrs. G.R. Engleman, Mrs. E.P. Woods, Mrs. Annie M. Engleman, Miss Bettie Harris and Mr. S.H. Harris, all of whom were present when the end came, to receive his benediction and hear the assurance that he was both ready and willing to meet his Maker. His death was a glorious triumph for the Christian religion. Death was robbed of its sting and the grave of its victory. He had lived more than the allotted years to man and died in fullest hope and faith.
His faithful friend and pastor, Rev. W.E. Arnold, was called from Somerset to preach the funeral sermon, which he did most appropriately and feelingly at the home of the deceased at 11 A.M. Sunday and then hundreds of loving friends followed the remains to their resting place in Buffalo Cemetery, notwithstanding the rain came steadily down and it was generally a disagreeable day.
