US Congressman. He was elected to represent West Virginia's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1871 to 1875. He also served as a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates in 1861, as a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates from 1869 to 1870, as a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from West Virginia in 1876, and as a Presidential Elector from West Virginia in 1884.
