He is the son of Samuel and Mary A. Henderson. His father, Samuel Henderson, died by disease during the Civil War in Natchez, Mississippi leaving a wife, Mary nee Bashore, Gus and two siblings. Gus' birthdate was found in an affidavit in Samuel Henderson's Civil War Widow's Pension file at NARA (National Archives Washington DC) The following are two newspaper accounts providing a few details to Gus's life and death:

2 APRIL 1874
"The second report of the Soldiers Orphan Home is located at Normal, on land donated by Judge David Davis, of the U.S. Supreme bench. The number of soldiers children in the institution the past year was 642, of which 8 were from Marshall and 19 from Putnam County.
Pupils from Putnam County: John H., Augustus and Cora F., children of Samuel Henderson of Florid, member of Co. E, 11th Il., who died at Natchez, Miss., Aug, 30, 1864"

THURSDAY, MAY 14, 1885
"Gus Henderson, the boy who was drowned in the river here some four or five weeks ago, was found caught in the willows just below town. After the coroner's inquest the body was taken to Florid for burial."
