James Scott, Earl of Dalkeith was the son of James Scott, 1st and last Duke of Monmouth and Anne Scott, Countess of Buccleuch.
He was baptised on 26 May 1674.
He married Lady Henrietta Hyde, daughter of Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester and Lady Henrietta Boyle, on 2 January 1693/94.
He died on aged 30 at Albemarle Street, London, England, from apoplexy.
He was buried on March at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London.

He fought in the Campaign in Flanders in 1692.
He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) on 7 February 1704.
