Ursula Bennett was born March 27, 1878, in Artemas, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Rev. John Bennett and Anna Catharine Sowers. On April 11, 1904, in Bedford County, she married Hiram Jay, son of James and Hester Ann Smith Jay. They were the parents of 3 children: B. Gladys, James Kelly and Vera Grace Jay.

"Lifelong resident and former road supervisor, Eugene Jay, recalls hearing from his father, that his grandmother, Ursula Bennett Jay, once taught at this school around 1900."


Obituary for Ursula Bennett Jay from the Bedford Gazette of Wednesday, March 16, 1955:

"Mrs. Ursula B. Jay died at her late residence on Water Street, Everett, Tuesday, March 15, 1955, after a lengthy illness. She was born March 12, 1878 at Artemas, the daughter of the Rev. John and Anna (Sowers) Bennett. She was married to Hiram Jay on April 11, 1904. He preceded her in death May 31, 1932. Mrs. Jay is survived by these children: James Kelley Jay, Clearville Route 1; Miss Vera Grace Jay, at home, and sic grandchildren. Also surviving are these sisters and brothers: Mrs. Herman Morse, Elgin, Illinois; Miss Mary Bennett, Artemas; Mrs. William Peterson, Denver, Colorado; Edgar Bennett, Cumberland; Quinter Bennett, Flintstone, Maryland; and Earl Bennett, Copley, OHio. A daughter preceded her in death. Mrs. Jay was a faithful member of the Evangelical Church of the Brethren, Everett, and as long as her health would permit was an active member of the ladies' groups and Sunday School of the church. Funeral services: Friday, March 18, at 10 a.m. in the Evangelical Church of the Brethren, her pastor, the Rev. Robert G. Mock, and the Rev. E. M. Detwiler officiating. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Stewart Funeral Home in Everett. Friends may call at the late residence from 11 a.m. this Wednesday morning until the time of service at the church."
