Cause of death: Cardiac arrest, brought about by accruing scar tissue in the pleural cavity, the result of a stab wound (which also resulted in loss of most of his left lung) suffered in a 1940 bar fight in Ft. Hays, Kansas.

Newell Mullin, about 1940, in his Aeronca NC31939 airplane, which he bought in Ft. Hays, Kansas, while atending college there as a math major (after the war he completed his degree in mechanical engineering at Washburn Univ/Topeka). His pilot's log book records some very interesting adventures flying the skies of pre-war midwest America, as well as occasional trips home to Elmira, NY. He had earned a U.S. government commercial pilot's license through the Civil Aeronautics Authority's pilot training school that was set up in 1940 at the Hays municipal airport, very likely in anticipation of the coming war with Germany, where pilots would be needed. Instead, Newell enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps right after Pearl Harbor (Dec. 7, 1941) and was sent to the Pacific theater, including the invasion of Guadalcanal. In the interim, his mother sold the Aeronca ("It was just gathering dust" at the Elmira airport, she later explained) to a local man who was, as it turned out, a German national, who tested the plane by flying low looping circles over the city, which was a major wartime manufacturing center. As might be expected, this resulted in an immediate kerfuffle involving police and military investigations (think "homeland security"). All ended well, however, and the buyer, declared innocent of spying, took possession of the plane. Newell didn't go back into fying again after the war, and he missed his Aeronca, and the carefree pre-war days that went with it, all the rest of his life.

Liz Baker and Newell Mullin, summer of 1939 (both 19 years old) on the back porch of the Mullin home at 1208 West Water Street, Elmira NY. Newell is about to leave for college in Ft. Hays, Kansas, and Liz is trying to be cheerful about it. They have known each other since they were 12 years old, but nothing is certain. She will be attending college in Ann Arbor, Michigan, later transfers back to Elmira. He has been thrown out of a freshman physics class at Syracuse University for contradicting the professor's assertion that it is impossible to fly faster than the speed of sound. Disgusted, Newell drops out of S.U. and decides to head west. Overseas, the winds of war are gathering like steady distant thunder. And so here these two are, posing for the camera, for all they know for the last time. It's 1939. Nothing is certain. Nothing is certain.

Sgt. Newell Disbro Mullin, April 23, 1943, home on leave from the Marie Corps, in back yard of the Mullin family home at 1208 West Water Street, Elmira NY. In the background is the landmark that was known as the Doolittle house, torn down in the 1970s to make way for an apartment complex. As for Newell, he has survived, physically at least, mortar fragment wounds three months into the invasion of Guadalcanal, and is now stationed at the Marine Air Defense base in Goleta, California, where he is a bomb disposal technician and aircraft armorer. At some point in his military career he was also a drill sergeant and achieved the rank of Master Technical Sgt. before mustering out in November of 1945.
