Wanda said her Grandmother told her there were 3 spinsters who had filed on land and they hired some cowboys to paint their barn. When they finished, the cowboys painted "Rosebuds" on the side of the barn in large letters. The ladies were so angry and painted over it. When Mrs. Nix applied for the post office, she submitted the name Rosebud. It was accepted. The mail was carried by horseback for sometime.
Wanda Coots' maiden name was Nix. She was married to Carl Dale for many years. Her tombstone simply says Wanda Dale. I'm not sure how those names should be done on F.a.G. when they've married again late in life. It seems that you would want to be able to search "Dale" to find her, yet Coots was her name when she died. Confusing. Anyway here is a bit of her history:
Moore Nix came with his family, The Mark T. Nix's, to Rosebud, NM in 1907. He had 3 sisters, Guy, Madge and Ruby. Mark and his wife filed on land and established a mercantile store. Moore married Ethel Kelly in 1912. Wanda was born at Rosebud, Harding Co., NM in 1913. Her mother died in 1918, so her grandmother raised her. She spent most of her time at the store and played with the children who came in with their parents. She went to school to her Aunt Madge in a small building; later her grandfather gave land where the present school it. They moved to Clayton for a while so she could go to school there and study music, then they came back to Rosebud where Wanda went to school her sophomore year. She graduated from Dalhart, TX in 1930.
Wanda eloped with Carl Dale from a dance and they were married in Mosquero, NM in 1930. Though her grandmother predicted that it wouldn't last 6 weeks, they were married almost 60 years. They lived in Panhandle, TX then came back to Rosebud. They had a daughter, Janie, born in 1931 and a son, Phillip, born in 1937. Phillip was killed in an auto accident in 1944. They had moved to Nara Visa in 1942 so the children could go to school. Janie graduated from Nara Visa.
Wanda and Carl moved to Tucumcari where Carl farmed and Wanda worked at the Citizens Bank. Then they moved back to Rosebud where they lived in Wanda's grandparents' house and they raised cattle. They moved back to Panhandle, then back to Tucumcari again and Wanda went back to work at the Citizens Bank. Carl passed away at the age of 81 in 1989. Sometime after Carl's death, Wanda married Mr. Coots. She passed away at the age of 89 in 2003.
