Born at the estate "Beverly" in Worcester County, Maryland, he initially studied at the Washington Academy and later attended Yale College. He was admitted to the bar in 1793 and commenced law practice in Somerset County. Following two terms in the Maryland State House of Delegates (1793 to 1795), Dennis was elected as a Federalist to the Fifth and three succeeding Congresses, serving from 1797 to 1805. In 1798 he played a key role in conducting the impeachment proceedings against Senator William Blount. He died in Philadelphia. He was the father of future US Congressman John Dennis and uncle of Congressman Littleton Purnell Dennis. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
