This is the grave of Sarah Duggan Swann, the second wife of John Cowan Swann. It is located beside the grave of John Cowan Swann, and between his grave and that of daughter-in-law Maggie.
Sarah grew up on a farm in Jones Cove, Sevier County, one of 13 known children. Her family had settled in the area in 1784. Her parents were War of 1812 veteran Daniel Duggan Jr. and Polly McMahan Duggan.
Sarah and John married in 1851. Sarah was step-mother to Samuel, Robert W and Vineyard Rhoten, who were all small children when she married widower John Swann. She was the only mother that infant Vineyard ever knew. Later on, at least five children that we know of were born to Sarah and John: Susanna, John Cowan Jr., Rachel Victoria, Melissa Catherine Swann Dunkin (buried Henrys Crossroads, Sevier, TN), and Elizabeth.
Note: some family trees at ancestry list Sarah as "Sarah Jane" (without documentation) but I do not have evidence that her middle name was Jane. Her husband's first wife, however, was Sarah Jane Brimer, who was known as "Jane". Sarah is one of five Sarah Swanns from the same era in Jefferson County. Swann Hall at Carson Newman was named for one of them, but it was not Sarah Duggan Swann, as one or two have believed.
