Doyle D. Rhodes (Master Sergeant, U.S. Army-retired) was born on May 21, 1917, in Langley AR to Lee Andrew and Nonnie Lou (Gay) Rhodes. He passed away on August 27, 2011, at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 6 days. He grew up in Langley where he attended local schools.
Doyle joined the Civilian Conversation Corps, working until he enlisted in the United States Army on Oct. 30, 1940, in Tyler TX, attending basic training at Fort Sam Houston TX. He participated in the D-Day Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944, where he received a Purple Heart for wounds received in action shortly after the invasion. He was a prisoner of war from December 1944 until May 1945. In December 1987 he was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal for his honorable service while a POW. Doyle also served in the Korean War. During his military career he received numerous awards and medals to include: War World II Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal. He married Blanch M. Goad on Sept. 6, 1947, in Locksburg AR. MSG Rhodes retired on Jan. 31, 1963, at Fort Bliss TX. He and his family moved to Lawton OK in February 1963. Mr. Rhodes worked at Fort Sill Post Exchange and Fort Sill Post Engineers and was an instructor at Summerall Hall at Fort Sill until his retirement in 1979. He continued to work at the Fort Sill Commissary for 25 years until his 91st birthday in 2008.
He is survived by his wife Blanch of the home and son and daughter-in-law Rodney D. and Mary F. Rhodes of Sherwood AR.
Mr. Rhodes was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Bob Rhodes and Bill Rhodes; sisters Nora Parks, Nelsie Dugan, and Elsie "Jimmie" Lawless; and numerous nieces and nephews.
