Myrta was the daughter of William and Sarah Skaggs. She married Gilbert Bowman in Montgomery County, Indiana on Oct. 31, 1878. They were the parents of two daughters, Iva and Elsie.

The 1870 Census shows Myrta V. Skaggs (age 9, born in Indiana) living in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, Indiana with her parents William (age 40) and Sarah A. (age 39) and siblings Harriett E. (age 17), Melise E. (age 14), Samantha E. (age 12) and Theodore M. (age 5) Skaggs. She married Gilbert Bowman in Montgomery County, Indiana on Oct. 31, 1878. The 1880 Census shows Mirtire W. Bowman (age 18) living in Walnut Township with husband Gilbert (age 23).
