Charles William Durkee, son of Miles Ford Durkee and Rebecca Brown, Was born October 13, 1860 at Shady Lake, Minnesota, and departed this life, May 17, 1936. At the age of 75 years, 7 months and 4 days. He was at the home of his son, Everett Durkee, At Washington, Nebraska, at the time of his death.

His father was a soldier in the Union Army and the family suffered many privations during the rebellion in the absence of the father. They moved to Missouri at the close of the war and were pioneers there. He was united in marriage to Jessie May Cox, October 7, 1883. To this union were eleven children born, Four of whom preceded him in death.


During his early married life he was a coal minor for twelve years. When his health was impaired he turned to farming as a means of livelihood and followed that work until a few months ago. In the year of 1911 he moved with his family to Spalding, Nebr., Where he has since made his home. He was a member of Rosedale Methodist Church for many years; also a member of the board of stewards of that church. He was a good neighbor, always ready to help out in times of sickness and sorrow. Since the death of his wife two months ago he was visited in the homes of his children.

He suffered greatly the last few weeks from ill health and grief. He leaves to mourn his loss, seven children: Mrs. Chas Garver, Eldorado Springs, Missouri: Daniel Durkee, Tabor Iowa: Mrs. Freda Reed, Tiffin, Missouri: Mrs. Charlotte Swisher, Council Bluffs, IA.: George Durkee, Pacific Junction, Iowa: Mrs. May Thompson, Council Bluffs, Iowa: Everett Durkee, Washington, Nebr,: Twenty eight grand children and one great grand children; also one brother, Fred Durkee, Red Oak, Ia.; and two sisters Mrs. Julia Kelly, Magna, Utah and Mrs. Lizzie Wilber, Hastings, Nebr.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church of Spalding on Tuesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Timmer. The text was: "Precious in the site of the Lord is the death of his saints" Psalm 116:15. Interment was at the dublin Cemetery.
